Emily Gear and Maya Calypso Durham contemplated their Shetlandic heritage and their relationship to it growing up across the Atlantic in immersive and folkloric dreamscapes. Maya created a series of oil paintings that depict Shetland lore as she imagined it growing up. In her 16 minute long film “and the hills can walk in the mist” Emily explored the island of Foula’s own mortal urgency and the way in which the landscape shifts and is destroyed, with new life growing unstoppably up and out of its wounds.
The script from “and the hills can in the mist” was presented alongside watercolors sewn into cotton and wool handmade frames as well as the glass blown puppets and sculpted clay sets from the film. Homemade refreshments native to Shetland (shepherd's pie, peppermint tea, and oatcakes) were served during the reception in May, 2022
